September 14, 2010 Windsong now belongs to Jim's son Gordon Kyle. Jim lives in Norwich, CT and will keep the boat in Noank, CT. Your webmaster spoke with both Mark and Jim at some length and discovered/shared some interesting tidbits of information. Mark had a earlier O'Day Dolphin 24, also named Windsong. Click here to check out this developing story.

We will be starting a new webpage for Gordon's Windsong. Click to go there

The following is the story of how we 'found'' Windsong.

Windsong, sailing out of Newport YC has had multiple sightings. In the summer of 2007, one of our Dolphin Field Investigators (DFIs) got this photo on their cell phone camera. Another field investigator made contact and made the existence of this website known to the owner. And on January 15, 2008 still a 3rd field reporter found Windsong's PHRF certificate and reported in. That gave us the owner's name, Mark We got her surrounded!

We don't know exactly what year she was built but she has characteristics similar to O'Day boats built in 1962 or later - a low bridge deck and wide tapered companionway, a molded fiberglass mast step and a wood capped molded fiberglass combing - all changes introduced in 1962. Sooner or later we'll get to talk to Mark and find out more..

Your Webmaster, perusing online PHRF rating schedules, has noted that Windsong has a local (Narragansett Bay) PHRF rating (seconds per mile) of 262 spinnaker, 281 non spinnaker.

September 5, 2008 - Your webmaster was on assignment in Newport and used this opportunity to drop off a note for Windsong's skipper - and naturally took a few pictures.

Windsong keeps good company. Perhaps 100 yards away from her slip in Newport are these 3 rafted Twelves Nerfertiti, Enterprise and Intrepid.

This early Dolphin has had some custom work done. Note the low bridge deck and wide tapered companionway and the built up fiberglass combing with top wood trim - changes introduced by O'Day in1962. The hatches have the light/dark alternating wood colors. Also, she has an inboard track.
Windsong has an inboard engine but also has a large transom hatch and locker. She does not have a traveller. She has swim ladder fittings on the port side.

Molded mast step (also a 1962 O'Day change), molded hatch slide rails and in line shrouds

March 23, 2010. Windsong finally checked in - alas with the news that Mark and Jim are planning to sell this boat. We exchanged emails and here are Jim's consolidated and edited, with a picture.

Very nice

We own Dolphin 24, Hull # 66, Windsong - time is catching up with us and is forcing us to  sell.

The title says it was built by U.S. Yachts in 1963. Mark Chramiec and I (James Kyle) bought the boat from a N.J. owner in 1999, and we have completely re-outfitted it, upgraded the electrics,  refinished the hull, and modernized the electronics in the ensuing ten years. It's a great boat in good condition, with a fairly  new diesel. We've raced it casually and enjoyed cruising within a 60 mile radius.  Thanks for the offer to post it; I'll get you the details in the next day or two.

Jim Kyle

March 29, 2010. Jim sent in a couple of interior pictures and some comments (minor edits).

Ron,

Thank you so much for all your help and interest.

The original marine head discharged through the hull. The sea cock was removed and the head replaced  by a previous owner (probably when it became illegal on the Chesapeake Bay) by a porta- potty  located under the starboard. settee, shown in the attached picture. I have never seen a builders plate, so I doubt if there is one.

Re your question about the sheer clamp - the clamp consists of a 3" hull lip integral with the hull moulding , a mating section on the deck moulding, topped by a teak strip and through bolted every 6" or so with 1/4" bolts. - same as that currently used on J 24's.

March 30, 2010. A great example of a good looking dodger, with matching mainsail cover. We'll add this to our Technical Section on Dodgers.

April 10, 2010. Jim sent in a sketch of #66's interior - photos to follow.
