Dave Knickerbocker's Akela, O'Day # 67, Douglaston, NY (updated November 16, 2010)

September 14, 2008 - We are just getting Akela's story - actually, we already had a lot of it but did not recognize Akela's part in it. Ralph Heinzerling (Jack Rabbit) told us of a boat named Akela owned by Dave Knickerbocker that he raced against on western Long Island Sound in the early 1960's. It was an O'Day built boat hull on which Dave had built a wood deck and cabin. Bingo!!

Akela is now in California and has quite a story. Dick Galland who owned Kestrel, which has a wood deck and cabin, told us that he bought his boat in 1972 and her name then was Akela (Rudyard Kipling's Wolf). This boat is now 'Petaluma" and owned by Tim Blair. Click on Kestral to go to her, and " Petaluma" to go to her.

We have spoken with Dave and he will send us a picture. Dave told us he bought Akela in December, 1962 as a bare, white fiberglass hull from O'Day and built glassed over plywood decks and cabin on her. He sold her in 1969 or 1970 to a guy who kept her in Three Mile Harbor, East Hampton, Long Island. He also said that many years ago he spoke with the guy from Texas (Dick Galland ) who bought Akela. Akela was the MORC Long Island Sound champion in 1967. Until we get an Akela picture here is a more recent picture.
